Kai Havertz & Gabriel Jesus: Leverkusen's Prodigy, City's Golden Boy, Arsenal's Odd Couple

Two very different educations

Havertz's football education happened almost entirely at one club. Signed by Leverkusen at 11, he broke into their first team at 17, became the Bundesliga's youngest-ever debutant and, later, its youngest player to reach 50 and then 100 league appearances. By the time he left Leverkusen for Chelsea in 2020, he was already being compared to Michael Ballack and Toni Kroos, a homegrown"Alleskönner", a player capable of doing everything, in the words of Ralf Rangnick.

Jesus's education was Brazilian, and rougher round the edges. He scored 54 goals in 48 games as a Palmeiras youth player, won the Bola de Ouro helping them to a first national title in 22 years, and was still a teenager when Manchester City paid £27 million for him in 2017. At City he wasn't the undisputed first name on the team sheet, he shared a frontline with Sergio Agüero and later Erling Haaland, but he won four Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup, and Guardiola rated him as good defensively as he was going forward.

One man is inseparable in most minds from the BayArena; the other from the Etihad's trophy cabinet. Neither is a name you'd naturally pair with the other, until Arsenal.

London, and a shared unravelling

Havertz arrived at Arsenal in 2023 for £65 million, having already won a Champions League and a Club World Cup with Chelsea, scoring the winning goal in both finals. Jesus had arrived a year earlier, in 2022, for £45 million, arriving with four league titles and a reputation as one of Europe's most complete forwards.

By the 2024/25 season that our records mark as their overlap, both were trying to find a settled role in the same forward line, Havertz increasingly used as a striker for his link-up play, pressing and aerial threat, having started out at Arsenal as a left-sided mezzala; Jesus fighting to reclaim the sharpness of his City years after injuries began to bite. That season brought difficulty for Jesus in particular: an ACL injury sustained in an FA Cup tie against Manchester United in January 2025 ended his campaign early, part of what has been described as an Arsenal spell that went "from unbelievable to unfortunate."

Havertz, by contrast, was building toward the club's Premier League title the following season, continuing the trophy-collecting habit he'd shown at Chelsea.

Different clubs, same room

That's the pairing that shouldn't quite make sense on paper. One is the Bundesliga wunderkind who became a Champions League final matchwinner for Chelsea; the other is the Brazilian golden boy of Guardiola's City dynasty. Fans of German football will always see Havertz in Leverkusen's black and red; fans of the Premier League's dominant club of the 2010s will always see Jesus lifting trophies at the Etihad.

For one Arsenal season, though, their careers crossed, two forwards from utterly different footballing worlds, sharing a training ground and a fight for the same shirt number's role, before their paths diverged again: Havertz toward a Premier League title, Jesus toward Barcelona in 2026. It's a reminder of how football scrambles careers that otherwise never had reason to touch.
