Godfred Donsah: from Serie A to Serie D with Ostiamare

From Accra to Serie A

Godfred Donsah's football journey began at DC United Agogo in Accra before he crossed to Italy to sign for Palermo, having earlier had an unsuccessful trial at Roma. He moved to Verona in the summer of 2013 and made his senior and Serie A debut there in April 2014, coming off the bench in a win at Atalanta.

That performance was enough to convince Cagliari to pay €2.16 million for him just months later. Donsah's stock rose further in 2015 when Bologna brought him in on loan with an obligation to buy that would eventually value the deal at €7 million, split between an initial fee and a conditional add-on. He made his Bologna debut in a narrow loss to Sassuolo and went on to sign a four-year contract with the club, becoming a fixture of their midfield for several seasons.

Donsah's career took a more peripatetic turn in the years that followed. In October 2020 he was sent out on loan to Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor for the 2020–21 season, returning to Bologna afterwards. But by August 2021 his time at the club had run its course, and he terminated his contract before joining Crotone on a two-year deal. That stint was brief too, by January 2022 he had left Italy again, this time for Yeni Malatyaspor in Turkey.

Where he is now

After that stretch of loans and short-term moves across two countries, Donsah has settled into a much quieter chapter of his career. He now plays for Ostiamare, a club competing in Serie D, Italian football's fourth tier and a world away from the Serie A grounds where he once faced Atalanta and Sassuolo. It is a modest return for a player whose transfer fees once ran into the millions, but it keeps him playing regularly in the country where he built his career.

For Bologna supporters who remember Donsah as a combative midfield presence in the mid-to-late 2010s, his move to Ostiamare is a reminder of how quickly careers can taper once the big clubs move on. He is still playing the game, just far from the spotlight that once shone on a €7 million midfielder plying his trade in Serie A.
