Kwadwo Asamoah: the peak season, then the knee

For one Serie A season, Kwadwo Asamoah was as good as any left-sided player in Italy, a Juventus title-winner who found himself ranked among the best footballers on the planet. What followed was a run of injuries that never quite let him get back there.

The season that announced him

Kwadwo Asamoah had already shown promise at Udinese before Juventus signed him in 2012, but it was the 2013–14 campaign that marked his high point. He scored a notable goal in a 1-0 win over Fiorentina as Juventus went on to defend their Serie A title and add the Supercoppa Italiana. His performances that year earned him a place in the Serie A Team of the Year for 2013–14, and in 2013 Bloomberg had ranked him the 27th best footballer in the world. He was also named Ghana Player of the Year for both 2012 and 2013, a reflection of how consistently influential he had become for club and country at exactly that time. Deployed by Antonio Conte as a left-sided wing-back or wide midfielder, Asamoah combined stamina, technique and tactical intelligence in a way few others in that position could match, and he was central to Juventus's dominance of Italian football in the mid-2010s.

The injury that changed things

The turn came almost immediately after that peak. In the tenth league match of the 2014–15 season, on 1 November 2014, Asamoah suffered a severe knee injury against Empoli that ruled him out for most of the campaign. He only returned to the pitch at the very end of the season, by which point Juventus had already won the league, and he missed their Coppa Italia final win over Lazio entirely. It was the first of several serious injury setbacks that would punctuate the rest of his career. In September 2016 he suffered a complete tear of the medial meniscus ligament in his right knee, sidelining him for weeks again. The pattern repeated itself often enough that his Wikipedia entry notes plainly that he was frequently sidelined through injury during his later years at the club.

A long, diminished afterlife

Asamoah remained a Juventus player until 2018, making 150 appearances for the club and collecting six Serie A titles in total, but his role shrank as fitness problems recurred. He moved to Inter Milan in 2018, reaching a Europa League final there in 2019–20, and then to Cagliari in 2021, where he had a quieter final chapter. Even so, his longevity carried its own distinction: in February 2021, on his Cagliari debut, he became the most-capped African player in Serie A history, overtaking fellow Ghanaian Sulley Muntari. He announced his retirement from professional football on 5 October 2022. Off the pitch, he and his wife Abena have two children, and in 2020 he donated $20,000 to a Kumasi hospital supporting Ghana's COVID-19 response. The 2013–14 season remains the clearest marker of what Asamoah was capable of before injury started to define the rest of the story.
