Victor Moses: the wing-back season, and the long road after
For one season, Victor Moses was reinvented and it worked: a winger turned wing-back, trusted in every big game, lifting the Premier League with Chelsea. What came after was a slow unwinding, loan after loan, country after country, until he ended up far from the competitions that once knew his name.

The season that reshaped him
Moses had already been a Chelsea player for four years by the time Antonio Conte arrived in the summer of 2016, but he had spent most of that spell out on loan, first to Liverpool, then Stoke City, then West Ham, never quite forcing his way back into the first-team picture. Conte changed that by changing Moses. Deployed as a wing-back in a back-three system rather than as the winger he had always been, Moses became one of the first names on the team sheet. He made 34 appearances in 2016-17 as Chelsea won the Premier League, and in November 2016 he was named the PFA Fans' Premier League Player of the Month, a rare individual honour for a player who had spent most of his career on the move. It was, by any measure, the best season of his career, and it came at a club that had previously found little room for him.
What followed
The form did not carry into the next campaign. The following season, the Wikipedia record notes simply that Moses failed to impress, and from there his career became a string of loan spells away from Chelsea: to Fenerbahçe in Turkey, then to Inter Milan in Italy, then to Spartak Moscow in Russia. He did pick up further honours along the way, a losing Europa League final with Inter, a runner-up FA Cup medal with Chelsea in 2016-17's wake and a winning one in 2017-18, but he was no longer central to Chelsea's plans. In 2022, after nine years officially attached to the club, he left for good, signing permanently for Spartak Moscow, where he won the Russian Cup in 2021-22 and extended his contract through 2024.
The long road down
When his Spartak deal ended in the summer of 2024, Moses moved to England's Championship with Luton Town, making his debut as a late substitute in September and scoring in only his second appearance before the club released him the following May. From there the journey continued eastward again: in January 2026, Kazakhstan Premier League club Kaisar announced his signing. A player who had once worn Chelsea's colours in a Premier League title win, a Champions League tie against Manchester United, and an FA Cup final, was now plying his trade in Kazakhstan's top flight.
A career with more than one peak
It would be easy to read Moses's path as simple decline, but his career had other high points too, most notably with Nigeria, for whom he won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and played at two World Cups before retiring from international football in 2018. His Chelsea season under Conte remains the clearest instance of a player finding exactly the right role at exactly the right time, even if the years that followed never returned him to that level. By the time he reached Kaisar, he was a very long way, in both distance and stature, from the wing-back who helped deliver a title.
