Villa hold firm, United go away empty-handed

Chelsea's midfield arithmetic, and Newcastle closing in
Chelsea are in contact with Roma over midfielder Manu Kone as a contingency should Enzo Fernandez be sold before midnight, while also reportedly close to a deal for Lamine Camara, according to CaughtOffside. The Kone pursuit only becomes live if Fernandez goes, so the two threads are not parallel bets so much as a chain: Fernandez out, then Kone in. Separately, Newcastle are said to be £5m short of agreeing a deal for Matias Fernandez-Pardo, with hours left to bridge the gap.
