Dembélé and Donnarumma: Barça's Winger, Milan's Keeper, PSG's Treble
Picture Ousmane Dembélé and you picture Camp Nou: the €105 million winger who arrived as Neymar's heir and spent six years trying to live up to it. Picture Gianluigi Donnarumma and you picture the San Siro: the teenager who broke into Milan's goal at sixteen and became the club's last great homegrown hope. Neither man belongs, in the memory, anywhere near the other. Yet in 2024/25, both wore Paris Saint-Germain red and blue - and left with a Champions League winner's medal apiece.

Two identities, forged elsewhere
Dembélé's football identity was built in Spain. He joined Barcelona in 2017 as one of the most expensive players in history, a direct response to Neymar's departure for PSG, and he wore the number 11 that came with that weight. Injuries defined much of his time there - hamstring tears, repeated layoffs - but so did silverware: three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey wins, two Supercopas. For all the frustration Barcelona fans felt at a talent only fitfully delivered, he leaves associated with that shirt more than any other.
Donnarumma's story belongs to Milan in the same way. He debuted in Serie A at sixteen years and 242 days old, the second-youngest goalkeeper ever to do so for the club, and was almost immediately anointed the successor to Gianluigi Buffon. Six years as Milan's undisputed number one, a Coppa Italia final appearance before he'd turned nineteen, a Serie A Team of the Year nod in 2020-21 - he was, for a generation of Rossoneri supporters, the last pure product of their own academy to reach the top of the game.
How they ended up together
The routes to Paris were different. Donnarumma left Milan on a free transfer in 2021, a departure that split opinion in Italy, and had already won a Champions League and a Euro 2020 winner's medal (plus the tournament's Player of the Tournament award) with PSG by the time Dembélé arrived. Dembélé's move came in 2023, a €50.4 million return to his native France after Barcelona's patience - and his body - had both been tested for six years.
So by the time the 2024-25 season kicked off, a Milan-reared goalkeeper and a Barcelona-schooled winger found themselves in the same squad photo. Neither arrived at PSG with it as his first instinct of a career; both arrived carrying the identity of somewhere else entirely.
The season that changed both their stories
What happened next is not a footnote for either man - it is arguably the high point of both careers. Dembélé underwent what the record calls a resurgence: 33 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances, Ligue 1 Player of the Year, Ligue 1 top scorer, and the Champions League's own Player of the Season award, en route to PSG winning a continental treble. That campaign ended with him lifting the Ballon d'Or.
Donnarumma was behind the same shot-stopping that underpinned the run: a Champions League winner's medal, a Yashin Trophy, and recognition in the Champions League Team of the Season, having worked his way back into Luis Enrique's first XI after being dropped for Matvey Safonov earlier in his PSG career.
Why it still feels strange
None of that erases the pull of their first clubs. Dembélé's injuries and discipline at Barcelona, Donnarumma's teenage emergence at Milan - those are the stories attached to their names in most retellings. But for one season, under the same manager, in the same colours, the Barcelona winger and the Milan goalkeeper were simply teammates, winning the biggest prize in club football together. It is a reminder that even the most club-coded careers can intersect in places nobody would have guessed.
Je Dembélé atarudi Barcelona au lieu ya kuendelea na PSG?
