Raphaël Guerreiro & Harry Kane: Dortmund and Spurs, united in Munich

Two men, two identities

Guerreiro's football story was written almost entirely in yellow and black. Signed by Borussia Dortmund in 2016 for a reported €12 million, he spent seven seasons there under Thomas Tuchel and successors, deployed as both left-back and midfielder, scoring 40 goals in 224 games and winning two DFB-Pokal titles plus the 2019 DFL-Supercup. He was the quiet, introverted Portuguese full-back, a description that came from his own Portugal under-21 coach, Rui Jorge, who nearly walked away from Dortmund with a Bundesliga title in 2023, only to see Bayern snatch it on the final day. He left Dortmund a free agent that summer.

Kane's identity is even more singular. Born in Leytonstone, raised as a Spurs fan '15 minutes from the ground', he became Tottenham's all-time record goalscorer with 280 goals across 14 years, including loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester and Norwich before he ever established himself in north London. He won Premier League Golden Boots, reached a Champions League final, and had a mural unveiled outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in his honour. For a generation of fans, 'Harry Kane' and 'Tottenham' were functionally the same phrase.

The Bayern convergence

And yet, ironically, it was Bayern Munich, the very club that beat Guerreiro's Dortmund to that 2023 title, and the closest thing English football fans watched Kane finally leave England for, that brought them together. Guerreiro joined Bayern as a free agent in June 2023 on a three-year deal, making his debut off the bench in a DFB-Pokal tie that September. Kane arrived the same summer for a reported €110 million, becoming the most expensive signing in Bundesliga history, and scored 36 league goals in his debut season alone.

Our season records confirm the overlap as fact: both men were Bayern Munich players in 2025, part of a squad that shared silverware together. Guerreiro featured 23 times as Bayern won the 2024–25 title, scoring two goals including a brace against Bochum in March. Kane, meanwhile, was in the form of his life, winning back-to-back European Golden Shoes and being named Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2024–25. The following campaign, 2025–26, saw them lift the Bundesliga together again, with Guerreiro scoring the opener in the title-sealing win over Stuttgart and Kane later scoring a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final as Bayern completed the domestic double.

A pairing that shouldn't need explaining, but does

Neither man's Bayern spell erases what came before. Guerreiro's honours list still reads Dortmund first; Kane's Tottenham goal tally will likely never be matched by an English player at another club. But for those two Bundesliga-winning seasons, the Dortmund stalwart and the Tottenham icon lined up together, chasing the same trophies in the same colours, an overlap that neither man's reputation, built over a decade at rival clubs, would ever suggest.
